Cappel's Ace Hardware can trace it's roots to Ivan Cappel, who with his young family, moved from Independence, Iowa to Atlantic, Iowa in 1944 when he was presented with an opportunity to own his own John Deere dealership. He operated as a John Deere dealer until the early 1960s, and after his oldest son Dick joined him in the business, he decided to convert his implement dealership into a farm and home store. His son Tom joined the business in the decade also, and in 1968, they became affiliated with Ace Hardware.
Throughout the 70s and into today, Cappel's Ace Hardware in Atlantic has become synonymous throughout southwest Iowa with having everything for the farm and home. The business is currently operated by Tom Cappel and his two sons, Tim and Trent, who are carrying on the family tradition of being helpful hardware people!
Cappel's Ace Hardware in West Des Moines was opened by Dick's son, Doug, in 2007 alongside his wife, Jen, and parents. Doug wished to bring the world-class customer service and helpful spirit that Ace and the Cappel family had been doing for generations to West Des Moines. Cappel's Ace Hardware in Norwalk opened in April 2016.
Cappel's Ace Hardware opened a third location in Indianola, Iowa in July of 2020 amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.
